A call to save the life of the Iranian political prisoner Abdulreza Ghanbari.

Abdulreza Ghanbari, 42, has 14 years of high school teaching experience and was a lecturer at the Payame-Nour University before his arrest. Mr. Ghanbari was arrested in the post-election protests on the religious day of “Ashura” last year. He was charged with “participating in protests” and “chanting against Khamenei, relations with opposition groups abroad” and “ fighting the rule of God” and was sentenced to death.

False accusations based on confessions forced by torture, leading to death penalty, is a routine method by the Iranian judiciary system, which is used as a scare tactic to deter people from participating in protests . The charges and sentences given to those arrested in the post-election protests, are considerably exaggerated compared to the committed crime ( protesting against the election outcome). Obviously these prisoners have been taken hostage by the Iranian government to suppress the protests. Therefore Abdulreza Ghanbari and those sentenced to death on the mere charge of participating on the post-election protests, are in imminent and serious danger of execution.

Last year Arash Rahmani Pour and Mohammad Reza Ali Zamani, two accused of participating in the post-election protests were suddenly executed with similar charges to Mr. Ghanbari. Since Mr. Ghanbari was arrested in Last year’s Ashura protests, his execution in the anniversary of those protests is a high probability and his life is in serious danger.

Past experience shows that the Iranian government has no regard for the will of the Iranian people .Only international and diplomatic pressure can affect the decisions made by the Iranian government and ultimately save the lives of the political prisoners.

Bloggers Against the Death Penalty urge all the human rights activists and international human rights organizations to break their silence against the horrific and appalling human rights situation in Iran. We urge everyone to pay attention on the political prisoners who have been arrested after the elections, because they can be executed any minute to scare away the protesters. Bloggers Against the Death Penalty call on the European countries and the United States to give the highest priority to the human rights situation in Iran, in their negotiations. Specifically, we are asking all human rights organizations in particular the Amnesty International and the human rights council of the United Nations to intervene immediately to save the life of Abdolreza Ghanbari by pressuring the Iranian government to revoke his death penalty and free him immediately.
